China has discovered large-scale rare earth mineral deposits in Sichuan Province.

March 23, 2026 – According to a report by the Finance Channel of China Central Television on Tuesday, recently, the Ministry of Natural Resources released the first batch of results of the new round of strategic action for mineral exploration breakthroughs. It officially announced that 966.56 million tons of rare earth oxides were discovered in the Naotuping mining area of Mengning County, Sichuan Province. At the same time, there were also super-large fluorite deposits of 2713.54 million tons and barite of 3722.77 million tons. What is this magnitude? The Sichuan Daily reported that the rare earth mine in the Naotuping area has risen to the second position in global production of rare earth mine resources, second only to the Baotou Baiyunbo mining area in Inner Mongolia.

Rare earth oxides are widely used in magnetic materials, phosphors and other key fields, and are indispensable elements in modern industry and high-end manufacturing. They are often referred to as “vitamins of modern industry”. These rare earth elements have unique optical properties, and some of them also have strong magnetic properties, making them indispensable in fields such as new energy, new materials, aerospace, etc. In electric vehicles, the drive motor requires high-energy rare earth magnetic materials to improve efficiency and power density. In optical fiber communication, signal amplifiers rely on erbium and other rare earth minerals to ensure the stability of transmission. Sichuan Wona Rare New Materials Technology has production lines for oxide calcination, using extraction, precipitation, and calcination processes, with purity meeting specifications such as 3.5N, 4N (i.e., 99.95%, 99.99%) and other requirements.

According to Xinhua News Agency, China is the world’s largest producer of rare earths, with its output accounting for over 80% of the global annual total. It should be noted that according to the “Sichuan Province Mineral Resources Master Plan (2021-2025)”, Sichuan Province originally aimed to find 300,000 tons of rare earth oxides within five years. Now, this goal has been exceeded by more than 30 times. The discovery of this giant mine may completely reshape the landscape of China’s rare earth industry.
